Today, West Ham United made this August look much better than the last with their first win of the new campaign today, away at Watford.

With an almost identical appearance at Vicarage Road that the Hammers had to end last season, West Ham was at it again today with the help of their new record signing. Check it out below as we take you through this week’s player grades.

Grades from 0 to 10

Fabianski – 6.9

The keeper only faced three shots on target this week out of a barrage of shots, 23 in total. A well put away goal from Gray was the lone shot left in. Solid game for the Hammer of the year as he did what was needed.

Fredericks – 6.5

I thought that Fredericks played a well-rounded match and even got up the pitch quite a bit to push on the attack. No big mistakes were here other than I wanted to see him push on the defender in the second half to get a goal.

Diop- 7

Compared to the past few weeks, Diop was on one today. He made 3 key tackles and a few blocks to help out Fabianski in the net. This might the turning point for Diop’s season and hopefully, his performances are only up from here.

Ogbonna – 7.1

Weirdly enough, Oggy didn’t have an awful game other than the being passed by for the goal. I won’t put that on him as the rest of the team didn’t get back in time to help and that was clear by the level of disappointment from the skipper. Diop and Ogbonna paired well today I thought.

Masuaku – 7.9

The man of many discussion topics over the past few weeks turned up today. 75 touches, 44 passes with an 84% passing accuracy, he commanded the left side well. He played well going up as always, having 3 dribbles won and 3 tackles to boot. For me, he’s won the starting LB job.

Rice – 7.2

There were a few times during the match that Declan played a bad ball but that was it. The young English international played a solid game with his trusty skipper to his side. He contributed with 4 tackles from the midfield and blocked a few incoming howlers.

Noble – 7.2

When Mark Noble plays, you know the rest. The skipper looked like he didn’t miss a step coming back from injury and was put to the test right away where he put the penalty away. Between him and Rice, they commanded the second half of the midfield and kept the game in check.

Yarmolenko – 7 (subbed 55′)

The Ukrainian played his first significant time of the new season and you could tell. However, he didn’t play a bad game you could just see some rust. Letting the ball get away from him a few times would’ve been more costly than it ended up but he got a great shot on goal and won a few dribbles. All in all, it was a good start back.

Lanzini – 7.8 (subbed 88′)

Our jewel looked that part again this week. With a 93% passing accuracy on 46 passes, he was again a key to the attacking front. Getting in the action early a drawing the penalty was just the boost West Ham needed after a slow run out last week.

Anderson – 8.4 (subbed 78′)

You could tell last week that the Hammers needed Anderson back. 71 touches, 47 passes, a shot off the woodwork and he assisted the first goal of Haller’s West ham career. I’d say he had an excellent showing coming back from that injury against Man City.

Haller – 9.1 (Man of the Match)

Our record signing showed us why. Two goals on three shots, 7 aerials won, and he was literally up and down the pitch helping in all three areas. Sebastien Haller was, for me, the man of the match and the finisher West Ham has needed for some time now.

Subs

Antonio – 6.6

Many fans, including myself, were calling for him to start this week and when he came on, he was a huge breath of fresh air in the second half. In typical Antonio fashion, he was everywhere and he even went 2 for 2 with shots on goal.

Fornals – 6.4

Replacing Anderson after the match he had would be hard for anyone to do. Fornals kept the Hammers in the game and almost got a goal if not for the stop by Foster.

Sanchez – 6

Once again Pellegrini brought on the Colombian to finish out the game and once again fans looked confused. Sanchez came on and did what he was supposed too. Touched the ball 4 times, passed it 4 times, and all 4 passes were a success.
