In a transfer that sounds like one of those Twitter pictures where your name or birth date link to a random transfer, former West Ham keeper Adrian has signed with Liverpool.
The deal was rumored last night and has been confirmed by the club now, as the 32-year-old Spaniard has joined the Champions League winners after his contract expired with West Ham at the end of last season.
Yes, again, you read that correctly. Adrian is hoping to push Alisson for first-team minutes this season, and let us West Ham supporters tell you: if this happens you’re in some massive trouble. Adrian is always charismatic and great to the fans, but his form has dropped significantly since the move to the London Stadium and he won’t be getting into many (if any) Premier League matches this season.
Adrian struggled after the amazing season the team had in what was the final season at Upton Park. Maybe it was the pressure, maybe it was the expectations, maybe it was the faulty defense. Regardless, Adrian lost his net to Darren Randolph and Joe Hart for spells of those first two seasons and was replaced immediately upon Lukasz Fabianski signing.
Age doesn’t really factor into keepers’ effectiveness as West Ham’s now number one keeper, 34-year-old Fabianski has shown us. Fabianski’s ability to control a game from the back, make big saves, recover rebounds, and get off his line are all at an elite level without showing any signs of those skills dipping.
With Adrian now gone and signed with Liverpool I think we can all enjoy this clip one last time:
Adrian’s moment of infamy. The keeper ditches his gloves and slots home the winner in the penalty shoot out give the Hammers the win in a third-round replay with Everton.
From all West Ham fans, I believe the message will be the same. Good luck with Liverpool, Adrian, and don’t show up in immaculate form in either Cup match against us! Liverpool are getting a top man as their back up keeper and it will be good to see him still around the Premier League next season.
