It seems that every year around this time, Dimitri Payet rumors start coming back up. It seems that the former player who once burned West Ham is somehow still being linked for an East London return. Would West Ham want to have him back? Would the fans? We discuss.

West Ham sent out a tweet today reminding fans that it’s been four years ago since Payet joined the club which had mixed reviews, obviously. On one hand, there still seems to be a lot of tension towards him completely understandable.

On the other, some fans want him back with great enthusiasm. I for one am not but could see why fans would open to a reunion with the French international.

Our favorite ITK, ExWHUemployee sent out a poll question asking that since there seems to be a real divided opinion to settle it and simply would you be happy with a Payet to return simply yes or no. It’s tough as a lot of memories come back when you think about his time here both good and bad.

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

If you look at the player’s performances themselves, you can see why some fans want the 32-year-old back. In 48 Premier League matches he scored 11 times and helped out with 19 assists. The man is clinical from a free kick and can move up the field with the best of them.

The problem with him, and why most people don’t want him back, is that he burned the club on the way out. For the majority of West Ham fans, myself included, we don’t care about stats as much as just wanting to play for the badge on the shirt. How he left the club in 2017 was for some time at least, unforgivable. Could he add to the offense? Yes, but do West Ham need him anymore? No.

When Payet left he was arguably the best player on the squad. Since then West Ham has added a lot more attacking options leaving me to believe he wouldn’t be the best squad player anymore. Would he play ahead of Anderson on the wing? No, could he get into the attacking midfield now with Fornals and either Wilshere or Lanzini? Maybe but for me, still no.

We all saw how he leaving affected the morale and performance of the club and we saw it again this year too when a certain someone was looking at doing the same. My point in all this is simple, we no longer need Dimitri Payet because we have equal or better younger players and for one finally time, we do not need someone like him that will just plague up the club again.
