Three strikers West Ham should target if Gomez deal falls through
By Jay Korman
It has been known for a while now that Celta Vigo’s young Uruguayan forward Maxi Gomez has been Mario Husillos’s and Manuel Pellegrini’s number one transfer target this summer. However, the Irons must make sure to have a backup plan should the deal fall through.
While Pellegrini and Husillos have made some impressive signings already during there time at the London Stadium, Maxi Gomez would be the crown jewel to truly cap off the new transfer revolution for West Ham. The 22-year-old Uruguayan forward has scored 31 times and registered 10 assists the past 2 seasons in La Liga.
However, recent rumors suggest the move is in question after Valencia are also reportedly in on the striker and can offer him a chance to stay in Spain as well as Champions League Football. If the deal falls through, here are three strikers West Ham should consider taking a look at.

The first option for West Ham is Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic. The Serbian International enjoyed a great season in the Premier League despite his club being sent back down to the Championship after relegation.
He scored 11 goals and contributed 3 assists in 37 appearances for the London club. Mitrovic plays a very similar game to Maxi Gomez. He won’t beat you with pace, but he is great in the air and a clinical finisher. Mitrovic is definitely an option for the Hammers.
Another exciting player for West Ham to keep their eyes on is Birmingham City striker Che Adams. Adam’s tore up the second tier of English football this past season, scoring 22 goals and tacking on 5 assists in 46 league appearances. Adams, although a different kind of forward than Gomez, could be very effective in Manuel Pellegrini’s system. Adams has blistering pace and, although at 5’9″ he struggles in the air sometimes, his lightning-quick speed could terrorize many Premier League defenses.
This final player I believe would fit in well at West Ham is bound to divide opinion, and has been doing so his whole career. It is none other than Mario Balotelli. Although Balotelli has bounced around many top clubs in Europe, he always produces goals everywhere he goes. Balotelli has Premier League experience after a spell with Manchester City, and should West Ham offer for the Italian striker, I would think Balotelli would be very interested in a return to England.
Although Marko Arnautovic will likely be the starting striker for the Irons this season, he is 30 years old. West Ham lack depth at the position and need to make sure they have a plan B should anything happen to Marko. Balotelli would likely come in for a season or two, whereas Mitrovic and Adams could both be long term solutions for the Hammers. While we won’t give up hope on the Maxi deal, it looks more and more likely each day that Pellegrini will have some work to do should his top target stay in Spain.
