Who better to sign for the Hammers than Pablo Fornals?
By Adam Smith
Sorry for the attempted pun for the title, but West Ham have signed Pablo Fornals from Villareal to slot into their midfield corps. The talented Spanish midfielder will add depth and flair to the already formidable West Ham attack.
Another year, another exciting transfer in. West Ham Manager Manuel Pellegrini has done it again and brought in a player that will change the dimension of the Irons’ attack. Fornals, a Spanish international, is also just 23-years-old which makes him the perfect player to grow within the team.
Oh, and another high-quality announcement video, too!
Fornals was brought in on a £25m fee from Villareal. Last season the midfielder played in 50 total matches scoring five goals and assisting on six more. It’s clear that his dribbling and ball-handling skills are good enough to make space for him to impact the scoresheet.
It’s assumed that the player will take the next step in his game coming to West Ham. As 2018 marquee signing Felipe Anderson did, Fornals too will look to take the raw skill that attracted West Ham to him in the first place and grow it further.
In his inaugural Hammers interview Fornals referenced both Mario Husillos and Manuel Pellegrini when asked why he wanted to come to West Ham. He knew Husillos from his time in Malaga but has never played for or worked with Pellegrini.
"“I have worked with Mario before – I know him from when I was in Malaga. With Manuel, only when I saw him and admired him on TV. Of course, Manuel was a big influence because in the end he is one of the best coaches in the world and who doesn’t want to work with people like that?!”"
In return, Husillos has gone out of his way to compliment the man rather than the player, stating that while he’s a great player he’s an even better person and that he has made him [Husillos} confident that “we have signed an incredible professional and an incredible character.”
I believe this is exactly what the team need to look for, good professionals that won’t put the club in jeopardy for their own benefit. West Ham have pulled off another terrific signing and one that puts them closer to the attacking beasts Manuel Pellegrini wants them to be.
Welcome, Pablo Fornals!
