Will West Ham United pull the trigger on ex Barcelona midfielder?
It wouldn’t be a West Ham offseason without the resurfacing of names that the Hammers might have been previously linked with. This time, not like always, is a name that could potentially be a home run if the rumors are true. The rumor, West Ham are linked Andre Gomes to West Ham after his exceptional spell on loan at Everton.
The soon to be 26-year-old from Portugal has spent this past season in Merseyside with the Toffies while on loan for FC Barcelona. Typically with a player that comes from a side like Barcelona brings that name and hype, sometimes unprovoked hype. In the case of Gomes, he is more than just the hype as he enjoyed his time in Liverpool.

After starting the season injured, Gomes came back to life playing in 27 matches scoring once and assisting once. Not to mention, when he made the Hammer look bad in the later part of the season. He may not have his name on the score sheet much but you cannot compare that to what he means to the center of that offense.
According to talkSport, West Ham has made an initial bid for Gomes, somewhere around £18 million putting them in the driver’s seat for Gomes. I would imagine that Everton would want to get him back on a permanent deal from Barca but nothing has been officially sent as of yet.
The name is there, the talent is there, but do the Hammers need another playmaker in the center of the pack? As previously mentioned in another GSH article, the midfield at West Ham United is a bit full of skill and potential. Does Gomes have the skill or want to compete against the likes of a healthy Lanzini and Wilshere? As always, still a lot of question marks.
I for one like this idea as we need to add at least one or two more players to this already packed house. With the likes of Obiang wanting out, he could fill that role with a bit more excitement. Young Hammers like Cullen, Coventry, and Powell will need more time to blossom into this system but Gomes would already be ready to pick up and run.
Another key element to this, Gomes at 26 fits into the gaffers scheme of signing young talent (yes 26 is young) and not old past their prime talent. I am sure that in the coming weeks more will be released about this deal and if West Ham will get their first key transfer locked up. Until then, COME ON YOU IRONS!
