Green Street Hammers Special Series: Why I became a West Ham fan
Over the next few months of downtime between the end of the season and preseason, we at The Green Street Hammers will be doing a special series called Why I became a West Ham fan. This series with first go through all of the site experts and contributors for GSH and then I will be reaching out to you the fans to get your take.
How I fell in love with West Ham United was pretty similar to the major of fans. I loved their passion, grit, and loyalty the fans had for the club. They, after all, were a working man’s class type of club and that fit right into what I was and still am.
As I had previously mentioned in another article, I grew up in rural Pennsylvania where steel and coal were not just a thing but life. When I saw that there was a club that was initially created by an iron working group and that they played for the people and the people who followed loved this team no matter what, I was all in.

It was the 2011/2012 season when the Hammers were relegated down to the Championship when I first came to know the club. I was curious about the relegation/promotion concept and I knew that I wanted a team that played for the fans. West Ham and I were an instant hit. That entire Championship season was a blast. The Hammers had multiple scorers in the double digits and seemed like every game had some excitement to it.
It only made it better of course when West Ham made it into the playoffs and made it back to the top of English football. Being even more intrigued now, I decided I had to go take a look for myself in 2012 and have to amazing experiences at Upton Park in two exciting matches and just like people say, once you watch a match, you are ruined forever.
Through the ups and downs that come with being a Hammers fan, I wouldn’t have it any other way. We may not win the league or win many trophies but that isn’t what draws you to being a West Ham fan. West Ham is family, West Ham is life.
Fast forward 8 years and supporting this side has ruined me from being a stable person in civilization. However, I still beg you to tell me why that’s a bad thing. All three of my children could recite to you every word of bubbles, talk about a proud parent moment. People ask me all the time “why did you pick a club that is mediocre at best?” My response, I didn’t pick the Hammers, they picked me. Win, lose, or draw we are West Ham until we die!
Keep your channel locked on The Green Street Hammers as once a week we will be doing this special series and let me know if you are interested in being interviewed for this series and COME ON YOU IRONS!
