Felipe Anderson masterclass incoming? West Ham vs. Fulham
By Adam Smith
West Ham’s unmoved fixture at left wing, Felipe Anderson is primed for a breakout against Fulham. How can he make this happen? Be himself and embrace the excitement around his teammates returning to form.
Head-to-head, Felipe Anderson won’t have a tougher matchup than he did the last match against Aaron Wan-Bissaka of Crystal Palace. The emerging English right-back has been a break out star in the Prem this season, racking up tackles, take-ons, and adding some flair on the right side.
Anderson was kept off the scoresheet in that match but managed to out dribble and evade Wan-Bissaka on multiple occasions, stamping his name firmly on the list of players who have made it past him.
This week it’s either veteran right-back Denis Odoi or Cyrus Christie who’ll take on the Brazilian down the sideline. Either way, Anderson has to be licking his chops. Whether Anderson sees one or both of them (5-at-the-back) it really, won’t matter. Anderson’s evasiveness and offensive trickery should see him breeze by his competition.
Outside of individual skill, Anderson has a wealth of options supporting him and returning to action for this match.
The usual suspects will all be there: Aaron Cresswell to link up with and overlap at left-back, Declan Rice to outlet the ball to him, and the possible duo of Marko Arnautovic and Chicharito up top to feed the ball into, cross to, or work off of.
The real boost comes in the form of both Samir Nasri and Manuel Lanzini returning to the West Ham first team squad. Pellegrini has stated that both players trained all week and are in contention for the squad and starting XI. A possible 45-45 split of the match could be on the plate for the two attacking midfielders.
With attention directed towards Lanzini, Arnautovic, Nasri, and Chicharito, Anderson could find himself with more time and space than he’s used to down the left wing. The same goes for right winger Michail Antonio. With so many players able to make an impact offensively it should be feast time for Anderson.
The Premier League already has him picked out as a breakout star for FPL (Fantasy Premier League) in the Fulham match, and for good reason. Anderson can and has done it alone for the Hammers this season. Now with a more threatening team, at home, against relegation-bound Fulham the sky’s the limit for the Brazilian.
