International Decision a weight off of West Ham’s Declan Rice
West Ham might not be playing this weekend, but they’ve got a boost nonetheless. With Declan Rice picking England, the club benefits.
If I was Declan Rice’s social media manager, if he has one, I’d probably not be looking at notifications for a while. It’s going to be full on angry Irish men and women who feel that Rice has betrayed them. However that will pass. It’s a young man choosing his future. But it is going to be good news for West Ham.
Rice is a young player with a huge potential. Anyone who isn’t Irish has said his ambition should be applauded, even if some don’t agree the rules should allow him to make the switch. He may not play as many games for England as he would for Ireland, but if he has the chance to play more competitive matches then good on him.

What is so impressive about Rice is his mental resolve at a younger age. He’s had this decision going round in his head for months, yet he’s improved as a footballer and shown that he belongs in the Premier League as a regular player. For me he’s been our most consistent performer, and now he’s made the decision he’ll only feel more at home and at ease. The fact some people won’t be happy was obvious, that won’t phase him.
One of the other things that will boost the Hammers is that the fans of the club are English more than not. Rice was already a player that went through the academy and has endeared himself to the clubs faithful. Now he’s going to be a player that most of them will be able to follow for club and country, only cementing the admiration.
One other benefit, although it would be a disappointing benefit, is that an England international would sell for more money than an Irish international. That is, if we are to ever sell the young midfielder. Right now, I don’t want to begin to think about the club without him. He’s an incredible player with a wonderful future,
