West Ham have got quite a few players looking to leave this window. And so it looks like Lucas Perez is set to leave this January after only 6 months.

It’s been a weird few years for West Ham signings, with some going on to be fan favourites only to turn around and demand to leave and others arriving in a huge social media swarm only to be shown up as mediocre. Lucas Perez was meant to be a bargain addition, but he’s not added much to the squad at all.

For 4m I thought we had got a great deal, someone who would be a good rotation option striker. His techniques is strong and I was hoping he could do well occupying the space around our main striker, adding another link between the midfield and the attack. In reality, he is not suited to the Premier League.

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

Despite a couple of well taken goals for the club, Perez has been out of his depth for much of his time at West Ham. He’s not quick or strong enough to impose himself on the defences we see in the Premier League, and his attitude isn’t sterling either. He can appear to just wander around the pitch in search of inspiration, but when he gets the ball if he’s not in the box he is just too slow or lightweight to make much of it.

He is set to go back to Spain, although there is a late bit from Schalke. The move to real Betis is more likely because it is a permanent move straight away, whilst the move to Schalke is an initial loan. The Hammers want the money up front if possible. Whilst both La Liga and the Bundesliga are good leagues, they often don’t have the physicality of the Premier League. Here Perez will get a bit more time on the ball and his passing ability will be able to shine.

All in all Perez is unlikely to return to the Premier League, but it shouldn’t be said he is a poor footballer. He just isn’t suited to this division. I wish him the best and hope he finds success at wherever he moves to.
