One of the hottest properties in Germany linked with West Ham, seems all a bit good to be true right? Well it is very much likely to be a bit of a dream for us, but he is someone we considered if he had been available at the right price.

Those of you who listen to the West Ham Way podcast will have heard from club ITK ExWhuEmployee that the club did enquire about Werner, and were prepared to pay a decent fee. However, like most German stars, he is reportedly set to be moving to Bayern in the summer for a huge fee that the Hammers couldn’t match. Hence, no movement.

I don’t mind enquiries like this because it shows we’re looking at the best we could possibly get, even if there’s only a tiny chance. If the club had turned around and said his release clause is affordable we probably would have gone for it. If other clubs had signed him in the ensuing melee then that’s not great, but we’re showing ambition. We’re not scrounging round the Championship looking for players that will get us back up if we go down…
