West Ham are now reportedly resigned to losing Arnautovic to China. so as plans are formulated for his replacement, could we see the Hammers go big?

Most reports that have followed West Ham’s supposed loss of Arnautovic have hinted that a loan may be the immediate option. It involves minimal risk and supposedly allows more time in the summer to search for a replacement. It follows our historical moves, and seems to have been accepted by the fans.

However some media reports have put the Hammers as making a big money move for Uruguayan Maxi Gomez. If the number that are being reported are close to accurate it would mean taking the Arnie money, adding a little bit from the kitty and putting it straight back on Gomez. And I would love it if we could get it done.

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

Gomez has scored 9 goals in 17 league games this season, and is a rising talent. Like most rising talents he’s also attracting a lot of attention, and it’s from very high places. Barcelona are reportedly monitoring the situation around the striker and are likely to match any accepted bid, if anyone meets his release clause.

The Hammers don’t really have much to offer when compared with Barcelona, except for regular playing time. Champions League, staying in the same country and playing alongside compatriot Suarez and the legendary Messi might seem a little bit more of a draw for Gomez. However it’s never clear what a player wants right now, and Gomez might see this as a way to have a pay rise, get playing time in a top league and still end up playing for Barcelona or another top side by the time he is 25. But I would imagine the lure of Barca is likely to win.

If the Hammers can get this done it would be an amazing move. Gomez is 22, a top talent and already banging in goals. If we keep him long term then 50m Euros (his reported release clause) will be amazing value, and if we don’t we are likely to be able to sell him for much more in a few seasons.
