Two West Ham defenders under the microscope against Newcastle
By Adam Smith
The first stop on West Ham’s “string of winnable games” comes against a Newcastle team that a few weeks ago looked a pushover. Since then, Newcastle has stacked up three consecutive wins and will not roll over for West Ham in this match. So, how do West Ham stack up against the Premier League’s hottest team?
Well, it’s going to be an interesting match to be sure. Why? Because both teams like to play over the top, both are physical, and both are susceptible to defensive errors. For West Ham, the questions likely won’t come to their attacking but rather if their defenders can bounce back.
West Ham Defenders
Fabian Balbuena
Pablo Zabaleta – you’re good, Issa Diop – exceptional, Fabian Balbuena – falling off a bit now, and Aaron Cresswell – the chance is here, please take it!
For the first time this season Paraguayan centre-back Fabian Balbuena is coming under criticism for his play in recent games. He was tentative against City and looked out of sorts against Huddersfield Town too. He has been lacking that no second thought, bravery on challenges and clearances that have endeared West Ham fans to him so quickly.

It’s tough to judge a defender’s play when their opposition held the ball for 65% of the match and eventually scored four goals, but let me try. It’s nothing big, but Balbuena just needs to retune his defensive acuity to the levels it has been previously. Again, the City match isn’t a great measuring stick because they broke down the usually effective high line West Ham have implemented in recent matches, but find Diop and landmark yourself to not play anyone onside.
There is no need to drop Balbuena even if the Twitter doom merchants might have you believe so. He and Diop are the future of this defensive pairing for the rest of this season and onwards. Constant perfect play or lack of criticism can lead to complacency so hopefully, West Ham’s bargain defender can pull up his socks and come back stronger against Solomon Rodon and the Newcastle attack.
*P.S. with Felipe Anderson’s new and improved corner kick delivery don’t be surprised is Balbuena ends up on the scoresheet soon!
