West Ham Player Grades after 1-0 Loss to Spurs
By Jeff Catlin
West Ham United came out of the International Break in the same way they entered it: With a 1-0 defeat. This one was at London Stadium, where precious points are slipping away as the club has secured just 4 points from 5 home matches.
To be fair, West Ham likely deserved a result vs Spurs with their effort. But the difference was Spurs finished one of their chances, and much like last game vs Brighton-the Hammers could not. The Irons face the Spurs again in 11 days again at London Stadium, in a League Cup tie.
Grades (/10):
Fabianski–6
Didn’t have a chance on the goal from Erik Lamela just before the half. He wasn’t all that busy today either. He can’t keep it out and put it in on the other end too.
Cresswell-4
This was his big chance back into the side for the injured Arthur Masuaku and his performance was mixed at best, very poor if one is being critical. He appeared to think he was still playing as part of a three at the back rather than a true left back. Never really threatened up the pitch or with crosses. Felipe Anderson in front of him did not have a good day so perhaps Cresswell was always covering back because he knew Anderson wasn’t.
Diop-7
Along with Rice, Anautovic and Snodgrass you could make a case for Diop as our man of the match. Growing in confidence both defending and when on the ball moving up to midfield. Held Harry Kane goalless and chanceless today with his partner.
Balbuena –6
Another solid display. Had a chance on a header off a set piece too. Along with his partner kept Harry Kane quiet and off the scoresheet.
Zabaletta– 6
A Pro’s Pro. He rarely has looked or played like his age this campaign. Worked well along the right side with both Yarmelenko and when the youngster Diangana came on. A true coach on the field.
Rice- 7
Man of the Match contender along with the others mentioned. He is so solid and makes the simple play. He’s there for every tackle, moving the ball out of trouble and stopping any Spurs counter-attack.

Snodgrass 7
My surprise player of the year. His energy and work rate is relentless closing down on the ball. His support and skill in attack are very useful. Had to get Anderson off the corners today after Filip kept hitting them 3 yards off the ground into the wall.
Noble (72’) – 6
Came off for an attacker after putting in another good shift. When Zabaleta needed medical attention on the sideline, Noble dropped to RB for a few minutes.
Yarmelenko (40’) –5
This is a big injury concern for the Hammers. He has been a threat each week after reaching full fitness and he’s bagged a couple goals too which are currently lacking from the squad. If he’s out for an extended period, his absence will be felt.
Anderson- (57’) – 4.
Not his best game as a Hammer, maybe his worst. Didn’t create anything in the final third and was rarely seen defending or tracking back into West Ham’s end either. And his corners were so pathetic that Snodgrass took over. First sub (outside of injury)
Arnautovic -7
Game in and game out, the Hammers best player and most threatening offensive player. Created his chances again today, just didn’t have the finish. Was caught offsides working with Chicharito on a ball that did end up in the back of the net.
Subs Used:
Diangana (40’) -6
Didn’t look out of place in his real Premier League debut. He did not appear afraid to get the ball or to be involved when defending. Although he didn’t really create much outside of one chance along the right flank that didn’t amount to anything.
Antonio (72)- 5
Same old Antonio. Runs hard, a load at times vs defenders but lacks any skill at all. Like the one great chance, he had late on to equalize that he sent yards over the bar. Never been the same since his injury problems and without Payet to feed him perfect balls to head into the net.
Chicharito (57’) – 6
Was brought on to work with Arnie and create chances and score a goal. He created a few chances, notably the one where Arnie was offsides. The anti-Antonio—a lot of running around, not much result. It was good to see him out there for an extended period after battling illness but he if he doesn’t score he doesn’t bring much else to the pitch.
