Declan Rice must have his contract sorted by West Ham
Declan Rice performed very well against Everton at the weekend. The fact that his contract is still up in the air is a joke.
With the amount of money that’s being thrown around by most clubs at the moment, it’s not surprising that a lot of players want more of it. West Ham spent 100m on new players over the summer, and would have spent more on wages as well. So why are we not rewarding the young players that are improving?
Rice has improved almost in front of everyone’s eyes since he first became a senior Hammer. But he’s still earning less than former ‘future’ star Reece Oxford. How on earth can the board justify not meeting the youngsters demands? Given his rate of improvement it won’t be long until the amount he will be demanding will increase again, and rightly so.

Board v Rice
Whilst the board may be wary of being burned again after trying to give young players big contracts before they go off and start stropping *cough* Oxford and Quina *cough*, but Rice is a completely different player. Here is someone who has taken time to decide his international future at just 19. Many in this spot would make a rash decision which they could regret later. But Rice is a very considered young man.
With Pellegrini seemingly set on using him at DM, and why not given his Everton performance, Rice’s value will increase over the season. If the board don’t want an unhappy youngster on their hands they will have to start being realistic. According to ExWhuEmployee he’s on less than Oxford, and being offered less than Oxford. In what way is that a good deal?
I understand the board have to be careful of setting a precedent, but first team players should be paid as such. When you’re being considered every week then that makes you a first team player. There should be a way for these deals to be made without this protracted dealmaking. There won’t be many sympathetic Hammers fans if the board end up upsetting a talented youngster.
