West Ham have fired back in the war of words against the LLDC. Once again the stadium is a source of conflict for the club.

It’s not been a great few years for West Ham at the London Stadium. The results haven’t exactly stacked up to those at Upton Park, and the atmosphere has been patchy. On top of that, the club have run into multiple issues with the LLDC about everything ranging from the wifi, the advertising boards and now the surface surrounding the pitch.

In an open letter Karren Brady stated that the club were willing to pay for a new pitch surround to stop it being green, and to improve safety. However the LLDC have now said that the offer isn’t enough and they don’t want claret surrounds, as they want to work with sponsors to potentially change the surround themselves. But there is even more to the story.

Moving Forward

Now the club have said that the LLDC is using information to purposely mislead the public, and this argument is being pushed simply because there are issues with financing at the moment. There can’t be sponsors on the pitch surround, because the Premier League does not allow it in any way. And having looked at the arguments, I do think there is some merit to the club’s statement that the LLDC are just misleading. I don’t know why the LLDC are making such a fuss of this.

When West Ham signed this agreement, I said it was too good. Now I think it’s just lacking in every area. The Hammers don’t have the control over the stadium that would benefit both fans and Londoners in general, and the LLDC are not being compensated properly for the fact the stadium’s main use is football. I don’t see a way forward without everyone wanting to change the agreement.

The Hammers have to try and get more control, and the best thing for the stadium would be to owned outright by the main tenants. If there were still agreements to allow athletics during the summer then I can’t see why it wouldn’t work. This way it would actually lead to a more settled club, and a better fan experience all around. And the LLDC wouldn’t have to constantly worried about financial issues as well.
