Grading West Ham’s Transfer Window
Diop, 22m
Risk Factor: B-
This is one of the hardest transfers to judge, because from pre-season it seems as though Diop was a signing who’s going to show his best in the future, not this season. He carries a fair amount of risk, coming in at the club’s record signing at the time. The reason I trust in the signing is that Pellegrini wanted him in, and that’s good enough for me. Don’t expect him to suddenly be the best centreback in the league this season.
Value for Money: B
Again, transfers for the future are tough to value but in a world where Richarlison is worth up to 50m then this kind of deal isn’t the end of the world at all. Given that Diop now effectively represents our future at central defence, this kind of money is necessary to bring a talented player in. In truth we won’t be able to properly judge this until a few seasons time, but I have a lot of hope for the player.
Squad Improvement: B+
West Ham were looking for depth in the centreback position, and Diop will bring that as he begins to make himself a Premier League level centre back. He doesn’t become a star player straight away and he isn’t prescribed the title of wonderkid, so he just misses out on the A grade.
Overall Grade: B
A Good signings but one that’s hard to judge at the moment. With the Hammers looking to improve it’s likely that we will see more and more from Diop as the centreback roles change between Balbuena, Ogbonna and Diop. One more for the future but hopeful of good things this season.
