He left West Ham under a huge cloud, but his talent is undeniable. Could Dimitri Payet return to East London this summer?

It seems like a story plucked out of nowhere, but there seems to be a lot of smoke with this fire. Multiple sources are stating that Payet has been offered back to West Ham, but the details are far from confirmed. Would the Frenchman rejoin the club? Would the club take him? And would the fans want him back?

Where did this come from?

Usually a rumour this crazy would be discarded off the bat, but this one has traction. It comes as reliable ITK ExWhuEmplyee has been tweeting a story linking a former player to the club, however he has not specified who. However the hints have been pretty obvious!

There have also been other outlets talking about a potential deal, and the Hammers faithful seem to be interested. Despite the way he left, there are a lot who remember the goals and creativity he brought. Alongside that, many feel that it was the board’s fault the player left the way he did.

With Lanzini expected to be out of the team until January at the earliest, Payet would bring much needed creativity. But at 31 years of age, is he the right type of signing for the club? And who knows if he’ll go on strop again?

Could it happen?

Quite simply, as Ex says above, this move is miles away. Pellegrini would need to give it his OK before anything happened and that would take some convincing. The Chilean will not like a potential disruptive influence in the dressing room as he is starting his tenure, despite how good Payet can be.

There would also be the issue of a fee, said to be more than we sold him for, and the wages he would request. This would take a fair amount away from the club in terms of a transfer kitty to spend on younger players. Something I don’t think many at the club are in favour of.

If moves for other playmakers or wingers do not come off then Payet may be a good option, but I don’t think spending almost 30m on him now would be a good use of funds. I can’t see this move happening unless we lose out in multiple places elsewhere this window.
