West Ham have announced Manuel Pellegrini as their new manager in the next few days. The Chilean will reportedly look to appoint a director of football to help him in the transfer market.

A few months ago it came out that West Ham were after a director of football after comments from David Moyes. The Scot remarked that the club had no real process, and the board had too much control. But as the chances of Moyes remaining at the club faded, so did talk of an extra hand in the transfer dealings. But now Pellegrini looks like he wants to bring one in when he’s at the club.

Sam Inkersole, a reliable reporter on the club, held a Q&A yesterday about the club. We managed to get a question on this topic in, and it seems Pellegrini wants an extra pair of hands when dealing with the transfer market.

Good for manager and club

This may be a preference, or the former City manager may view this as a way of reducing the board’s influence. He’s an experienced hand and knows that meddling owners can burden the squad with players that are not needed or fail to recruit in necessary areas. With a director of football at least there’s another footballing voice in the conversation.

It’s a change I would definitely want to see, because our transfer activity has been exceptionally disjointed over the past few seasons. One season we try and sign future stars, then we get squad players, then we look to big stars. The direction is confused and it doesn’t help the team understand what’s going on.

Adding in a director of football keeps the consistency even when managers change and has been successful at clubs like Southampton, Sporting and Porto, who keep bringing in talent despite bigger clubs poaching some of their best players.

Who will come in for the role remains to be seen, but there will be a few people interested. A project with the potential for solid expansion doesn’t come along too often. That is, as long as Sullivan is happy to take a more backseat role in the club.
