Will Unai Emery’s success follow him to the EPL and West Ham United?

Well West Ham fans the cat out of the bag, so to speak. Moyes is gone, but now more importantly who will the Hammers choose his replacement?

There is a lot of talk about Rafa Benitez and Paulo Fonseca but who I find most intriguing is the Spaniard Unai Emery. However, will Unai Emery’s success follow him? The 46-year-old is set to meet West Ham boss Sullivan in the next few weeks but it is unclear on the boards direction moving forward.

What do I like most about Emery? Since January 13th, 2014 when he took over Sevilla, Emery has an incredible record of 194-57-67. He has proven he can win. Statistically speaking 64% of his games managed since 2014 have been wins, and that’s impressive. Not only has he won his domestic competitions but he won back to back to back Europa League Championships from 2013-2016. That’s not an easy task at all.

What else makes him a favorite?

His style of play is exciting, fast, and consistent.  Very unlike the current passive, ultra defensive play of the Hammers, Emery has a style that not only excites fanbases but ignites his players to push on and tally the goals.

Objectively speaking he’s a no brainer and it’s no secret that the club want to bring in a top name for the job.  Also, Sullivan had shown his interest in Unai before, most notably before we hired one Slaven Bilic back in 2016.

The bad with the good

Now yes, with every pro comes a con or two. In the case of many West Ham United fans they believe the Hammers have three cons sitting on the board but that’s neither here nor there, we are here to talk about the cons, of any that Unai Emery has.

One downside is that he’s never managed in the Premier League before.  I know sometimes that statement can be bias but in the case of other successful managers i.e. Luis Felipe Scolari or Christian Gross or I hate to admit it but even Slaven.  Coming to the EPL can be a daunting task.

Another potential issue could be Emery’s lack of English-speaking. I for one don’t see the issue as now a days there are many managers that can be successful without speaking a proper dialect but none the less I see the point when it comes to the player’s ability to be motivated or taught by someone they may not understand right away.

Next: Will Hammers cough up for Benitez?

The parting takeaway is this, the man can coach, period. He may be a far stretch for West Hans next manager as other clubs will come calling but the want and desire is there. Hammers fans crave attacking football, we live on it! And I believe that if given the role Unai Emery can bring that style back to the London Stadium and West Ham United.
