What to do with players who have conceded 11 goals and scored just two in the last three games? According to West Ham, you send them to Miami!

West Ham are in a very poor position. With only a handful of games left, they are dangerously close to relegation. Despite what many are saying, this is largely the fault of those on the pitch. We’ve won big games and shown quality, so why is that effort only coming in spurts? So in a strange move, the team are off to Miami. But it’s not too strange a move.

Imagine you’re failing at work. The manager is shuffling people into teams they weren’t before, removing those he thinks are deadweight and openly criticizing your work ethic in public. Your customers are breaking into your place of work to shout at you. If the contract situation is one that the company can’t afford to fire people, then there’s only one solution left. The, much dreaded, boardroom-fix-all, team-building trip.

Obviously, after crowd trouble and awful results, the team’s social media accounts aren’t being too public about this trip. However, the Hammers are in Miami for some warm weather training. But in my opinion, this must be a break which focusses on the mind of the players.

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

Quite simply, the players are fragile. This is a side who has pushed Manchester City, beaten Chelsea and come close to beating Arsenal in one season. They have ability. But their mental strength is awful.

Maybe it has something to do with the toxic atmosphere around the club brought on by the poor ownership. Maybe it has something to do with every single player being guilty of horrendous mistakes at some point. But whatever it is, Moyes has to sort it.

It might upset people to see the players who have disappointed them so badly this season get this treatment, but a break may do them some good. The next match against Southampton is crucial, and to try and forget the atmosphere at Burnley may do them good.

However, if this break leads to another loss where the team shows no backbone at all, then there will be anger. Fans are willing to accept a lot of things in the name of improved results. But they will not want to see players they pay a large amount of their salary to see, swan off to Miami for 5 days only to come back and not put effort in.

Southampton will be keen to push the pressure onto us, but Moyes must take the initiative, and this training camp is the best place to get his message across. That is, if he wants to be manager past the end of the season.
