Reece Oxford could be leaving West Ham this transfer window.

After once being hailed the future of West Ham, Reece Oxford may now being consigned to the club’s past. The young defensive player is rumored to be closing in on a move back to Germany, where he spent the first few months of the season on loan.

This isn’t a case of the club not rating him, because on return from Germany he was apparently impressing during club training, and Moyes was looking at keeping him around the first team. But his poor performance in the FA Cup has got people talking.

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

Even before Oxford returned there were interested clubs. Former loan club Monchengladbach were rumoured to have put in a 10m bid, but the Hammers wanted at least 15 to start any real talks. It now appears that other German clubs are interested, and Oxford could be tempted away.

His poor performance in the FA Cup match has one of two reasons. Firstly, he wasn’t fit and was rushed in because we were short of players. Secondly, he really isn’t bothered and is set on leaving this January. For the purpose of this part, we will assume the second. Because, quite frankly, it’s more interesting. If he stays, we will see his commitment.

Oxford may well want to head off to Germany because he is more likely to get games. The financial pressure on clubs in Germany is less, and you see far more youth coming through. They get games against top players and experience in some top competition. He will also be away from the British media, which is notoriously harsh on up and coming English footballers. More game and less scrutiny? Why wouldn’t he go?

Next: Will Moyes get financial backing in January?

Given the talent he has it would be a shame for him to leave, but it would be understandable. I hope he isn’t going to RB Leipzig or Monchengladbach, but I could see it happening. And if a fee of 15-20m was to come in for an unproven player…would our board really turn it down?
