Javier Hernandez is reportedly a 13m target for West Ham this summer.

Having been linked with the club previously, this feels a bit ‘rumour who cried wolf’ for West Ham fans. When you’re linked with the same player over and over again, it’s hard to believe anything new. But the fact remains that Hernandez would be a shrewd investment for the East Londoners.

The 13m pricetag should be nothing to the Hammers given their previous bids for strikers, and the Mexican definitely knows where the back of the goal is. Given the pricetag of other strikers, he should be moved up the list in terms of preference.

Why Now?

Well obviously there were strong rumours linking the striker to East London a few years ago. However it was strongly suggested that the club could not accommodate his wage requests in the structure at the time, and hence had to pass up. Whilst the initial fee is a little larger, and wages are roughly the same, it could happen this summer.

With no real chunk of money outlayed last summer the Hammers should certainly not be baulking at 13m. Their wage structure has also expanded due to Premier League money and moving stadiums. Given that Carroll, and hopefully soon Lanzini, are on nearly 100,000 a week we can accommodate Chicarito.

His goalscoring instinct would be a great counterfoil to Carroll’s target-man playing style and offer the side something different in terms of building the starting XI. However he doesn’t offer the same all round package that Iheanacho/Batshuayi does. In my opinion he should be considered as an alternative to Giroud, if the move for him fails.

They are both experienced goalscorers and can add experience into an explosive front line. What Chicarito can’t add is a player to consistently win crosses or physical battles, whereas Iheanacho and Batshuayi will add that as well as the pace and poacher instinct. Giroud is a mix of them, not specializing in one area but able to carry most roles at a decent level. West Ham need to look at getting two of these strikers, not just one and done.
