4. Paul Ince

If you remember back to the early 90’s, Paul Ince is a name that will make you pretty angry. Before the age of social media and instant stories, Ince still managed to get the timing all wrong on a transfer from West Ham to Manchester United. He managed to get the entire fan base in East London riled up over a single photo.

When the Hammers were relegated many of their top players were expected to leave. Paul Ince was one of those on the move to other clubs. And if the move had happened in the proper order then no-one would have done anything. But Ince managed to get that all wrong.

In early summer, just before Ince went on holiday, he agreed personal terms with United. To save time on having to come back after the move was finalized, they took a picture of Ince in a United shirt. That’s pretty awkward when the picture is leaked weeks before the season starts and you fail the medical so the transfer is cancelled.

Whether it was poor management, as Ince claims, or stupidity it’s still an infamous story. Ince, by most accounts, isn’t the nicest of people and still holds resentment against the Hammers fans for giving him so much grief over the issue. He completed his move to United a few weeks in to the season, but the Hammers faithful certainly haven’t forgotten the story.
