If there’s a new 4-4-2, this is it. It’s a classic formation for the modern game, keeping the midfield packed and offering the wide players the option to stay wide or cut in at will or as the game demands it. It’s fairly flexible without being overtly freeform.
This has been Bilic’s preferred formation when possible, or when goals need to be scored. Back when Payet was on the left this formation did lead the Hammers to some good times. However it has also seen the side ship some of their worst defeats in the last seasons. When you play this formation you have to be careful at the back.
If Bilic determines the back four as strong enough then this is likely to be the formation he chooses. If Onyekuru signs then Antonio, Onyekuru, Ayew and Feghouli will be the main men on the outside who can alter how the formation works for the side. Bilic may also choose to bring Samuelsen and Nathan Holland up from the youth side if he feels it needs bolstering or changing.
If the Hammers are chasing a win, this is the formation I would expect Bilic to choose. It might blow up in Bilic’s face, but this gives us the most versatility.
