4-1-2-1-2

This is one of my favorite formations.

It offers balance, structure and discipline to a side. West Ham have at times lacked all three of those tactical things and this would help with all of them.  The lack of a truly well rounded midfielder makes the importance of specification far more stark.  With the players specifically rounded into certain roles by this formation that should work swimmingly.

Carroll can play along either Ayew or Onyekuru or hopefully Iheanacho or Batshuayi.  Then that little magnificent Argentine Lanzini will be perfectly suited to the trequartista role behind them. Noble no longer has the pace or range to be a box-to-box midfielder but an anchor he can handle. The two players in the middle of the midfield will then have to work hard but it’s the best solution for a team that simply is lacking technical ability.

It may however lack natural width, but a balance has to be found somewhere.
