It’s officially silly season! West Ham have finished their Premier League campaign, so it’s time to link them with every player under the sun. To be fair, this one has some credibility.

Everyone knows how summer goes. Newspaper reports top class player is about to sign for West Ham. The board tweets something overly encouraging. The fans get excited. The transfer supposedly gets closer, and then boom…the club sign a random South American. And then the board wonder why we’re disappointed.

However this rumour isn’t a big player. I can’t even confess to having heard of the player before this week. But now it seems the Hammers are pretty interested in signing Sean Raggett from Lincoln this window.

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

Who is he? Where has this come from?

As I said before, I was unaware of this player before this rumour started coming around. Reliable ITK ExWhuEmployee tweeted about the interest overnight and it doesn’t seem to have too many other verifications, although I can see why West Ham are interested.

Currently plying his trade for Lincoln in the fifth tier of English football it might seem a strange move, but at 24 he is still progressing and we have seen that many young defenders can make the step up if they have the right capabilities. Lincoln won the National League this season, with Raggett playing 47 games over the season and chipping in with 7 goals for the side.

More impressively, the side kept more than 20 clean sheets in the games he played, including against Premiership side Burnley in a 1-0 win in the FA cup 4th round. He even grabbed the winner in that match. He is clearly a capable defender yet to be tested in the higher leagues.

My only issue is that we have a lot of centre backs. Signing Raggett with leave us with him and Reid, Collins, Fonte, Ogbonna, Oxford and Burke fighting for spots. Will it force one of the youngsters to leave? Or maybe one of the veterans? Or will Raggett join and be loaned to a Championship side? All of these questions are yet to be answered in the rumour mill.
