The search for West Ham’s main striker goes on. Andy Carroll is possibly off in the summer. Diafra Sakho seems to be injured both in mind and body. Getting the right player is a massive priority.

West Ham have searched high and low over the past few seasons for a new striker, to no real avail. Andre Ayew isn’t a true out and out striker, Calleri just hasn’t made the grade. Picking players from the Premier League seems to be the way the club want to go now.

Four players, at different points of their careers seem to be on the Hammers radar. From various sources, mostly from reliable source ExWhuEmployee, here are my opinions on the big rumours at the moment.

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

Jermain Defoe

This was a big rumour in January, and Slaven Bilic’s interest in the striker has not gone away.

With Sunderland being relegated, it makes a transfer more likely as a player of his age will want to play as often as possible at the top of the game. And if quotes are to believed, he wants to make amends in East London. If the club were to make a reasonable offer, it is likely he would want to join.

He would offer something that the club has missed, that natural poacher instinct. We have players that work hard, who create and win aerial challenges. At the current moment I do not think we have players who I would put my house on scoring when one-on-one. Defoe has that eye for goal, and when he misses it’s far stranger than when he scores.

Signing Defoe would not solve our main striker issue, but it would be a great squad addition. If there was another addition, it would be a great signing. If he was the only striker then there would be questions. He certainly isn’t going to be able to lead a charge on Europe for the team.
