We knew before the match West Ham would have to show determination and grit. But two players showed it more on the pitch, and the fans recognized that.

In a season that hasn’t seen too many standout performances or moments of note, Saturday was refreshing. The entire West Ham team showed their willingness to get down and fight for the cause.

Two players epitomized that attitude at the back, James Collins and Sam Byram. Both of these players have been in and out of the team all season, but showed they had the character and ability to pick themselves up once the going got tough, and the fans were delighted to see it.

James Collins

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

Collins was an absolute rock, a real old school defender. There wasn’t anything that seemed to phase him and he helped the men around him get organized. He does have an issue with pace, but on his day he is still top class.

Winston Reid or Angelo Ogbonna would be his best partner in defence, as they offer a bit more mobility at the back. Jose Fonte has similar traits which can make them vulnerable, but on Saturday it seemed that no-one could pass him.

Sam Byram

The absence of Sam Byram has been one of my major hangups with Slaven Bilic all season. Here is a talented right back that needs gametime to show his potential, and here he has. Most people thought he couldn’t stand up defensively but he has.

Next: New Gritty West Ham must stay

This weekend was a huge game for the former Leeds United player and hopefully it cements his place. Having youth come into the team through merit is a great sign for the future of the team. It could also allow other youth come it to other positions in the future.
