This summer is going to be a tough one at West Ham.

The match against Leicester demonstrated some of the issues with the team that were very apparent. The defense, despite the addition of Fonte, is still a complete mess and the midfield are either excellent or terrible but never reliable. The striker situation is poor. West Ham do not have a top squad.

The first thing that West Ham have to do is united behind Slaven Bilic. Has he been perfect this year? Absolutely not but that doesn’t mean replacing him is the best option either. It’s not as if managers of Bilic’s quality are all over the place. It won’t be easy to find a better option to replace Bilic. It also cannot be understated the list of issues Bilic has had to deal with this year.

Besides the consistent list of injuries to star players, a first year in a new stadium and the betrayal of a favored son Bilic is also managing in the best league in the world. The top-6 is a lock with wealthy and powerful international brand teams and then the rest of the pack are all strong as well.

Commit To Spending

If West Ham want to commit to strengthening the team they are going to have to spend money this summer.   That though genuinely shouldn’t be a problem according to totalsportek.com’s predicted 2017 money table the places between 8th and 16th the average payout should be about 105 million pounds. West Ham can spend somewhere between 60-75 million pounds on improving the squad and it’s what they should do.

They need a new midfielder or perhaps even two. Riechedly Bazoer and Ante Coric should suffice their alongside captain fantastic Mark Noble in future. Then a center back addition and Dominic Solanke or Michy Batshuayi of Chelsea should be added as well as Joe Hart.

Bilic will then need time to tie the squad together. West Ham cannot fire him and then start the process again with a new manager. A manager needs authority and that comes with time. A team can only get so far if they don’t trust their manager. First step: trust the manager. Second step: build a talented squad that can work with him and believe in him like he does in them. Third step: collect the winnings.

West Ham can improve a lot this summer and they need to. It would be a shame to be relegated within three years of West Ham’s best ever finish.
