The New Signings Were A Mixed Bag

West Ham gave a few new signings Premier League debut’s last night, with mixed results.

Arthur Masuaku played in Claret and Blue for the first time since his move from Olympiakos a week ago. He looked solid and you could see his comfort on the ball. Sometimes he got caught with it but he will improve, and he will be an attacking threat against smaller teams.

Nordveit had played in the pre-season and also in the Europa League qualifiers, but looked poor last night. When he pushed up he was taken out of position by quick passing, and when he sat back he looked slow. It might have been the quality of the opposition but it was not the best show of talent on the big stage.

Ayew was unfortunate and it looks like he’s picked up a thigh injury which would see him out for a week or two. When he came off it was noticeable how much quicker we lost the ball on the wings. I would have liked to see him take the fullbacks on a bit, but it wasn’t a bad start.

Gokhan Tore looked awful in the first half, but improved as we pushed on after Payet’s introduction. I think it’s noticable that he is more skillful than pacey, and would require players around him to thrive. As I said earlier, we were slow to get forward and that did hurt our wingers.
