Have West Ham Admitted Defeat In Hunt For Striker?
So the main story we’ve been reporting on this summer is West Ham’s hunt for a marquee striker that will bag us more than 15 goals a season.
However David Sullivan came out yesterday to say this:
"We have still got some fantastic strikers at the Club and we were the fourth highest scorers in the Premier League last season. In a perfect world I would like to think we will bring in a top class striker before the transfer window closes at the end of August, but if that doesn’t happen I have every confidence in our current strikers to continue doing the business."
So has Sullivan given up? Has he decided his strikers are World Class after all? Or is he just trying to play things down now so that people aren’t constantly harassing his kids and they can actually get a striker in without outrageous media pressure? Let’s have a look at all three options.

It is unlikely that Sullivan has given up. He is a West Ham fan after all so I imagine he will be working hard to bring in a big name striker to help the club and improve the club as a business as well. He has brought in a few players on the cheap in an effort to have most of this seasons budget on the striker, and I do believe he intends to try and deliver a top striker during the summer.
Onto the second point. No. He, like most people, thinks that Andy Carroll can score 15 goals a season if he remains uninjured. However most of the time whenever he’s not injured it feels like a blessing. See below:

However Valencia and Sakho have both made it clear that they want to leave, and no matter how good a player is if he doesn’t want to play for your club he will not perform to the best of his abilities. Sakho will be out the door as soon as a striker comes in, and if another one comes along then Valencia will be off as well, provided we get suitable offers for both of them.
The last point for me is why he said it. He’s probably realised his error regarding too much media attention on our hunt for a striker and he’s trying to reduce that, but the horse has bolted on that one. West Ham fans are pretty sure Sullivan is just trying to lessen the impact of not signing a striker in this window:
So we’ll have to wait and see what happens, I’m still holding out hope that we will sign a big striker as well as Calleri and we will all be excited going into the Chelsea match in a few weeks time!
